Five Questions With: G. Love
1. WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT?
I think it was Mister Yellowman, still one of my favorite records. His flow is rootsy but he is toasting like only Yellow can do. This is my favorite of all his stuff. I also got Kiss Double Platinum As a gift.
2. WHAT IS THE MOST RECENT (GREAT) RECORD YOU'VE HEARD?
Check the blues man! The Little Walter Anthology. He was the greatest electric harp player ever. So sick the harmonica is so powerful in the right hands he had more hits on Chess Records than everyone but Muddy Waters
3. WHO OR WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START MAKING MUSIC?
It was probably Bob Dylan and the Beatles who subliminally influenced me to start writing songs when I was 15. I got heavy into blues too; John Hammond was my favorite and led me to find others like John Lee Hooker and Lightning Hopkins. Don't sleep on hip-hop either: KRS-One, De La Soul, and Eric B and Rakim. All these peeps influenced me
4. DO YOU HAVE AN INDIE RECORD SHOP STORY/MEMORY?
Sure. I went to this great record shop called 3Rd at jazz in Philly. I was just starting to play harp on the rack. I knew someone must be doing something different than Dylan and Neil Young (both some of my favorites). I wanted to push it. They turned me on to John Hammond and I instantly became obsessed with blues music.
5. IF YOU WEREN'T A MUSICIAN, WHAT WOULD BE THE NEXT RUNNER UP?
I would be an English Teacher, a house husband or a movie star.

The poster was created for his stop to promote his Philidelphonic album. The event was incredible and up until the silliness that ensued when G’s buddy Jack Johnson stopped in for a couple sets, Garrett was the undisputed biggest in-store we’d ever had. He absolutely kicked ass. I remember when he came in I told him to play as long as he wanted and as long as he was having fun. Then, when way too many people showed up, and I noticed that the LBPD motorcycle division was having a meeting (or informal lunch) at Super Mex, and since we were at capacity, we had about 60 people outside hoping someone would leave so they could get in. Those two things seemed like a bad combination, so I asked Garrett to wind things up and he very publicly called me out for it, since I told him to play as long as he wanted. Everything worked out for perfectly, he played several extra songs, everyone had a blast, and the only time anyone every got booed at an in-store was me. Good times, good times.
