FAMILIAR TREES / EUGENE -- Free Instore Sunday January 15th

Our first in-store in what is already shaping to be one our best years yet for live music is upon us this coming Sunday. This in-store started coming together when Dennis started buzzing about a great new local band and brought in a copy of their debut release. Everyone was well impressed with the fancy stitched corduroy sleeve the disc came packaged in, then we put it on and floated off into a time of less stress, sun dappled ground (from filtering through a familiar tree, perhaps), and scent of cherry blossoms. Far from as new agey as that sounds, Familiar Trees walks the well loved, but somewhat overgrown, path previously tread by Mazzy Star and Slowdive, but both at their most quietly beautiful.

The band has a pretty popular Myspace page located at: http://www.myspace.com/familiartrees where you can find a few songs to whet your appetite, as well as comments from visitors like:

* “… voice is pure sunshine.”
* “…dreamy and wonderful.”
* “I come here to float.”

As this was all coming together, Ikey, who did a good stint behind the counter before he went off to rock the world, dropped a copy of his kid brother’s demos on us and we were all blown away… so was KCRW, you see besides playing our humble stage, Eugene will be an in-studio guest on Friday in the eleven o’clock hour (check it out, then change your weekend plans) Eugene, AKA Brandon Owens, has spent the past several years touring and recording as a bassist with the elite of the jazz world. A year or so ago, he picked up an acoustic guitar, learned to use a four-track recorder and started to write his own songs. After years of playing music but never writing his own material, Eugene’s songs just started pouring out, with over 40 songs captured on four-track in only a few months time. Though the recording process was painstakingly primitive, what has come out on these recordings is refreshingly honest songs that have a tremendous range, a warm immediacy and a real pop sensibility that is very different from the other sounds currently coming out of New York.

You can hear a couple tracks at Eugene’s Myspace page located at: http://www.myspace.com/eugenetheband
