Five Questions With: Deadman
![]()
Deadman had scheduled an in-store with us, which due to a conflict had to be rescheduled. Please check back for a new date in early 2006, and in the meantime, catch a repeat of their KCRW session here.
1. WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORD YOU BOUGHT?
Sherilyn: Though I bought music before this, the first actual vinyl record I remember buying was Sweet Baby James by James Taylor.
Steven: Sting’s “Nothing Like The Sun.” I still love that album.
2. WHAT IS THE MOST RECENT (GREAT) RECORD YOU’VE HEARD?
Sherilyn: I love the new Black Rebel Motorcycle Club album Howl.
Steven: I like the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club “Howl” album too – Also – Ray LaMontaigne’s “Trouble” album .
3. WHO OR WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START MAKING MUSIC?
Sherilyn: When I was a little kid, my dad used to carry me into my bedroom to tuck me in. I would beg him to serenade me with Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right”, a song that is perhaps a bit morose for a little girl. But it’s all those years of great folk music, the nights with my dad pickin’ guitar and the afternoons with my grandma playing hymns on the piano that made music such a part of me.
Steven: I was always interested in playing music and the concept of “a band.” I was 14 when I went to my first concert – U2 “The Joshua Tree.” After that, I was sold on playing music. I just needed to learn how. I’m still learning
4. DO YOU HAVE AN INDIE RECORD SHOP STORY/MEMORY?
Sherilyn: When I was in high school, my good friend Julie and I were rummaging through a record store when we found a copy of Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” single on cassette, which had about 3 different versions of the song. We drove around one Sunday afternoon from one tiny Texas town to the next listening to that tape over and over again, stopping the music only for ice cream at the local Dairy Queen.
Steven: I grew up in Dallas, where corporate music stores were all over the landscape. But we had “Bills Records and Tapes.” My friends and I started frequenting Bills to find Import records of what we were into or see what somebody might recommend. “Bills” is still the best.
5. IF YOU WEREN’T A MUSICIAN, WHAT WOULD BE THE NEXT RUNNER UP?
Sherilyn: I would love to be a chef and have a New American cuisine-style restaurant in Taos, NM or be a permanent member of ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos and George Will. Either job would probably provide interesting dinner table conversation around the holidays and impress my parents much more than being a musician.
Steven: I’m a frustrated film-maker; so I’d probably be trying to make movies of some sort.
