Far be it for me to get more excited about one in-store over another, mostly because we only bring people in to play who we think really have that extra something special; but, with that said, every once in a while, I just have to get damned excited. Rob Dickinson is one of those occasions. Best known as the vocalist of the epic rock band Catherine Wheel, Rob has recently done that "I can do this on me own" thing that often comes between bands and their most creative members.
Happily, Rob's solo outing, Fresh Wine For the Horses, presents him with the opportunity to bring some of the quiet and subtle elements to the front. The voice is still there, and sounding as rich as ever, but minimized, are the epic sweeps and roaring bombast of Catherine Wheel, replaced with the much smaller, yet no less powerful, equivalent. If it helps, think of Rob's solo work as a coy flirtation with grandeur, rather than the dog named Grandeur that you can't get off your leg.
Rob has chosen beauty over big, and while those aren't mutually exclusive (Catherine Wheel proved that time and again) Fresh Wine feels like Rob is enjoying doing things in a much more intimate fashion. This will be a special night and the music will be beautiful. Please join us.
