FRUIT BATS -- Free Instore Friday April 14
FRUIT BATS - Friday, April 14th - 7:00pm
Sub Pop recording act Fruit Bats will be stopping in for a very special in-store, which has been a very long time coming; you see several years ago we got a hold of an early copy of Mouthfuls, their Sub Pop debut (which was produced by Brian Deck, who has worked with the Shins, Modest Mouse, and Red Red Meat, among others) and we were blown away. Fruit Bats specialize in smart, melodic pop music with a decidedly 70s bent. Started as a lark, that turned into an outlet, for Eric Johnson, who got his start with Califone, Fruit Bats have recently released their 3rd album, Spelled in Bones. Their sound is tough to nail down, but here’s a good attempt: “[B]eautiful, heart-felt music in an age that resists beautiful, heart-felt music. Call them love songs dedicated to Ma Nature, primal lullabies, folk-pop gems (with an increasing emphasis on pop). It's music for dreamers, amateur zoologists, closet hippies, record geeks, mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters alike. It's music for all sorts, or, at least, the curious soul in everyone.” And while that doesn’t go to far in the race to give an idea what they sound like, it does give you a glimpse of the vibe.
Here is some recent press, a song, and a video:
“A bewitching collection of low-key pop” – Onion (A.V. Club)
“Lovely” – Mojo
“Spelled in Bones digs further into Johnson's fondness for '70s songsmiths and production. Gone are Mouthfuls producer Brian Deck's glassy casements and miles of space, replaced here by a sound more rooted and wood-grained.” – PopMatters
