One of the things that comes with being a music geek is a highly developed sense of hearing, so it should come as no surprise that we hear things; voices, mostly, but lately rumblings that we have too many singing songwriters in to play music here at the Finger, so to silence those voices, and allow us get back to the ones that say “go ahead, you’ll laugh about it later”, we’re happy to announce our first ever experimental improv, free-jazz in-store. The Anthony Shadduck Quartet has a new release on Long Beach’s own Sounds Are Active record label and our old friend Chris Schlarb, of Create(!) and the producer of this album, asked us to open our doors and minds and we said “Hell yes!” Anthony has played with Joe Biaza, Emily Hay, I Heart Lung, and Create(!) among others, and the rest of the Q'tet are guys who also manage to stay busy. The aptly named Debut album finds him stepping into the role of bandleader with an intimate and explosive recording, featuring Nels Cline on electric guitar (Wilco), Lynn Johnston on clarinet (Red Krayola), Anthony on upright bass, and Ches Smith (John Zorn, Marc Ribot) on drums and percussion. The music has been described as being loaded with “Creative corkscrews, harmonic u-turns and rhythmic regurgitation...” and the track below manages to fit in most of these adjectives (stay past the freak-out for full effect). Needless to say, this will be a bit different from the usual Fingerprints fare, but it will also be one of the few times this group ever plays together in front of an audience, so if you find yourself on the fence it is unlikely you will ever kick yourself for coming, not coming on the other-hand, could lead to bruised shins.
Listen to (and/or download) the track "Half & Half & Half".
This will be a wristband event, so please call or drop in to get a free wristband. The Anthony Shadduck Quartet release Debut will be available at the event, and will include a free event poster,
