Marissa Nadler -- FREE INSTORE
Marissa Nadler In-Store Performance
Thursday, June 21st, 7:00pm
Marissa is one of those rare artists that are impossible to look at directly; she's best observed out of the corner of the eye and reflected in shop windows, you see, that's how it is with entities that challenge description. In Marissa's case, there isn't an easy comparison, no handy box to put her in; it's dreamy and sparse and certainly of the neo-folk persuasion, but none of this does her justice. So, I figured I'd look to others for help and here's what I got: Bill, here at the shop, said in a complimentary tone "She sings like a bird." All Music Guide compares her to Neko Case, Josephine Foster, and Hope Sandoval (of Mazzy Star), but perhaps the closest of all is my friend Andy who said "Think of her as the Marianne Faithful of today's doom/60s psych influenced stuff coming out of England right now." It was a great effort on all counts, but my recommendation is to check out the in-store, and pick up the album, and let us know what you think.
