Joe Strummer should need no introduction, he was the lead singer and songwriter for "the only band that matters": The Clash. Joe powerfully mixed politics, passion, punk rock, and world music - and he came closer to changing the world with his music than anyone since Dylan. In a world light on heroes, Strummer was larger than life. To help draw attention to the release of Julien Temple's celebration of Joe's life, we're going to open up our stage for you to come in and do your best version of one of Joe's songs.
Here are the ground rules:
- We're going to limit it to as close to 10 performers as possible. Previous stage experience isn't required, and we draw a pretty friendly audience, but you need to know your song (which is why we've been announcing this for 2 weeks).
- We're opening sign-ups now. Sign-ups are first come, first serve and you need to know which song you want to do (so we don't have a full evening of Should I Stay or Should I Go).
- We will prioritize Strummer songs (either solo or with the Clash), but if you do a smoking version of another song identified with Joe and the Clash, and we have the room, we'll try to squeeze you in.
- In order to keep things moving we'll only be able to accommodate artists who require minimal set-changes (Solo, duo, & quick set small bands are all cool, but think percussion, not drums).
- We'll have some cool prizes, including some Clash DVDs and soundtracks to The Future Is Unwritten to give away to the performers that we pick as our favorites of the night.
- Feel free to interpret, this is one of our favorite Clash covers.
